Dr. Jennifer M. Peña, MD, FACP is a board-certified internal medicine physician, an Army combat veteran, a former physician in the White House Medical Unit under both the Obama and Trump administrations and primary physician to the Vice President of the United States, and an expert in digital and telehealth. She currently serves as a consultant for various telehealth companies.

Dr. Peña also serves as a Medical Advisor to the Board of Oya Care (the first women’s virtual health clinic in Brazil) and Julie Products, Inc (which provides over the counter emergency contraception options for women in the US). She is a physician consultant for Innovative Health Diagnostics (a CLIA-FDA accredited lab providing at home diagnostic services), for the Vidalús Clinic of the Boys and Girls Club of Puerto Rico, for URAC (where she participates in the accreditation process of health plans and systems), and a consultant and Chief Medical Officer for Medaica (a telehealth diagnostic platform with free FDA-cleared stethoscope for remote auscultation). She is a PC owner and medical director for QCarePlus (a digital health company providing PrEP, PEP and HIV services). She is a healthcare consultant for Impactivo, a health consulting firm in Puerto Rico that is dedicated to the development of initiatives that help improve the health of communities.

She is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP), a member of the ACP Digital Health Advisory Group, and the ACP’s Representative on the American Telemedicine Association’s Advisory Group in Eliminating Healthcare Disparities and Inequalities. She also just recently joined the Puerto Rico Telehealth Working Group.

Since leaving active-duty service in 2019, Dr. Peña has also served as Medical Director for Virtual Primary Care for Oscar Medical Group, and as Chief Medical and Clinical Officer of the telehealth companies K Health, Nurx and Vault Health. She most recently served as Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer for Measured, a Y-Combinator health startup company providing weight management solutions and nutritional services. In addition, she has served as a Hospitalist for INOVA and with Sound Physicians to assist in pandemic relief efforts, and has served as a part-time consultant for Private Medical, Global Executive Medicine and provider for the INOVA VIP 360 executive medicine practice. 

Dr. Peña has been named one of Business Insider’s “30 Leaders Under 40 Changing Healthcare in 2021” and Veteran of the Year for 2021 by Latina Style Magazine, among other honors. She has participated in medical contributions for CNN, MSNBC, BBC, Yahoo! Finance, Univisión and Telemundo, among other TV and radio networks. She has been a featured speaker at various national, international, and virtual conferences on digital and telehealth, COVID-19 and Veterans affairs. 
  
Born and raised in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Yale University in 2004 with degrees in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, and Spanish Language and Literature. She was commissioned in the United States Army in 2004, and entered active duty in 2008 after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She completed an internal medicine residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC in 2011.

Dr. Peña is married to Dr. Brenton R. Franklin, MD, MHPE, FACS, also an Army veteran and general surgeon. Jen and Brent have three K-9 “Sato” children and recently relocated to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
