Ray Ruschel spent nearly two decades serving in the U.S. Army, including deployment to Afghanistan and Jordan. He still serves as a member of the North Dakota National Guard and works as a night-shift mechanic at the Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative in Wahpeton.
Hoping to move up at the sugar-beet processing factory, Ruschel enrolled in business classes at nearby North Dakota State College of Science. There, the 49-year-old freshman tried out and earned a place as a defensive lineman on the NDSCS football team.
